THEY TOOK the bus to the therapist on Friday.

Sitting on the cramped and narrow seat, Malachi held Bran’s hand tightly and tried not to think too much about what was coming. When he glanced up, a middle-aged man from across the aisle was staring at him.

Malachi nodded at him and scooted a little closer to Bran. When he looked up again a few minutes later, the man—in his forties, with a bald spot, potbelly, and severe hygiene issues—was still staring at him, mouth hanging open just a little.

Malachi tightened his hand around Bran’s, his breathing shortening, and Bran looked up from his book. He took in the situation at a glance, the man still ogling Malachi, and Malachi’s tense posture, and muttered a curse before reaching up and hitting the bell to signal the driver to stop.

When the bus pulled over to the curb, Bran helped Malachi to his feet and down the aisle. The staring man tried to stand as they passed, and Bran whirled on him, stabbing a finger at his chest.

“No,” he snapped. “This is not your stop.”

The man sank back into his seat and watched them leave, pouting.

Safely on the sidewalk, Bran wrapped an arm around Malachi’s waist. “Okay, love?” he asked quietly.

Malachi nodded, fighting for air. “You didn’t have to… do that,” he managed. “He was just looking, I know… I know he wasn’t going to do anything. I don’t even know why it freaked me out so much.”

“I didn’t like him,” Bran said immediately. “And I’m not going to let some mouth breather frighten you into a panic attack.” He checked his watch. “We’ve got time to walk from here, if we hurry,” he said.
